Labor has revealed that the five Climate Change "experts" will be paid an average of $300,000 each and these are the people who will brief the Citizen's Assembly who will then find a consensus on the issue. Leading Aussie skeptics Bob Carter and Ian Plimer need not apply , although I would love to see them do so.

THE five climate change experts Julia Gillard hopes to inform public opinion on the issue will be paid an average of $300,000 a year.

Further detail on the government's heavily criticised attempt to build a community consensus on climate change have emerged in Labor's official request for costings from the Treasury. It reveals the $6 million Climate Change Commission will have five commissioners, each earning an average of $300,000, in line with the mid-point of pay guidelines set by the Remuneration Tribunal.
The commission, which the government expects to start in October and last four years, is intended to be an independent source of information and expert advice to explain the science of climate change and report on international action.
Part of the commission's role will be to assist the 150-member Citizen's Assembly, a group designed to find a consensus on the issue.

The costing request shows the government expects the assembly to meet three times, the first being later this year and then twice more by the middle of 2012. The government expects its plan to cost $2.7 million.
This panel is the silliest idea of the campaign and of course all the information supplied to the panel will be warmist propaganda with a predictable result. Fortunately the press and the public have been quick to see what a joke it is and it has had a negative effect on Labor's campaign.

Gillard and Abbott Neck and Neck

The gamble by Labor in changing from Kevin Rudd to Julia Gillard and then calling a snap election may be coming unstuck. After the initial honeymoon with Australia's first female PM ,voters now have the two parties at 50% each ,two party preferred ,with the momentum now with the Coalition as damaging internal leaks have blunted the Labor party campaign.

JULIA Gillard has warned her ministers they will be sacked if caught leaking from Cabinet.

As the hunt continued for the serial leaker stalking her campaign, the Prime Minister
declared Cabinet discussions should be "free and frank" but remain confidential.
"If there is anybody in my government, if we are re-elected, who does not respect the confidentiality of Cabinet, then they will no longer be a Cabinet minister," she said.
A trifecta of damaging leaks have alleged she reneged on a deal with ex-PM Kevin Rudd; that Mr Rudd treated national security meetings with "casual disregard"; and that Ms Gillard questioned paid parental leave and a pension increase.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the leaks proved the PM faced an "active campaign" against her from within.
"What the Australian people are starting to sense is that senior members of this Government don't think the Government deserves to be re-elected," he said.
The latest Galaxy poll of 800 voters, taken on Wednesday night for Channel 9, has Labor and the Coalition tied at 50-50 on a two-party preferred basis.
The previous Galaxy poll at the weekend had Labor leading 52-48. Labor's primary vote slipped from 38 to 37 per cent; the Coalition's has climbed from 41 to 43 per cent.
The election however will be won and lost in the marginal seats and that is where the two contenders are concentrating their efforts.

The Pathological Hierarchy of Humbug

Melanie Philips , one of my personal favourites, writes that the Global Warming cult is a middle class phenomenon among people sufficiently high in the Maslow "needs list" that they can afford the time to philosophise about it.
The great and wise Professor Philip Stott, who has painstakingly charted the anthropogenic global warming scam since it burst into public consciousness more than two decades ago, has penned some reflections on the cause of such epidemic derangement. Depicting it as the grand narrative that human greed and profligacy are changing the world’s climate apocalyptically, a sin that can only be appeased through public confession and self-sacrifice to the Goddess, Gaia-- a Grand Narrative that has now spectacularly collapsed before our eyes, even though certain politicians are as ever well behind the curve and are currently stranded alongside the professionally compromised activists who will never admit their epic error -- Stott observes that an explanation for the phenomenon can be provided by the psychological theory of Maslow’s ‘hierarchy of needs’:
As our basic needs are fulfilled and life gets more secure, so we place more emphasis on higher tiers. This rationalises our increasingly rights-based culture and the rise and entrenchment of environmentalism in everyday life. Subsistence farmers or poor labourers have more pressing needs to fulfil. But the obverse of this is that, as short-term, pressing threats are lifted, we have time to focus on longer-term or less urgent ones.
By this reckoning, there would need to be some fairly significant changes for the present obsession with climate catastrophism to be replaced. The economic crisis has already played some part: it is virtually impossible to deliver radical and expensive policies at a time when painful cuts are being made in spending on basics such as welfare and education. A hypothetical contact with an alien civilization could at some stage again shift our focus.
But there is another crisis which is almost upon us. The chances are that energy insecurity will hit us in the next few years. Ignoring the Peak Oil arguments for now, there is a looming gap in electricity generating capacity as ageing coal- and nuclear- powered stations are decommissioned and at least part of the slack is unrealistically expected to be taken up by a large expansion of renewable power generation.”
It appears that, the higher we move up the Maslow pyramid, the greater is our need for theoretical, manufactured, future ‘catastrophes’. ‘Global warming’ thus comprised the classic ‘need’ of the ‘loads-of-money’ generation. But, we are now plunging back to reality, so that we no longer require this particular ‘catastrophe’ for our psychological fulfilment. Of course, new ‘catastrophes’ will surely arise to replace it, and they are already doing so, in the guise of food and energy security, and genetic choices, among many others.
Meanwhile, here on Climate Depot is yet another stab at explaining this from a former believer in the faith who has now apparently seen the light. Physicist Dr. Denis Rancourt, a former professor and environmental science researcher at the University of Ottawa, now says that the entire man-made global warming movement is nothing more than a ‘corrupt social phenomenon.’
‘It is as much psychological and social phenomenon as anything else... Global warming is strictly an imaginary problem of the First World middleclass...The modern environmental move has hijacked itself by looking for an excuse to stay comfortable and stay away from actual battle. Ward Churchill has called this pacifism as pathology,’ he explained. ‘If you are really concerned about saving world's forests or habitat destruction, then fight against habitat destruction, don't go off in tenuous thing about co2 concentration in the atmosphere. Actually address the question; otherwise you are weakening your effect as an activist.’
A telling point, surely. The modern activist wants jam with everything. Well-heeled Greens rail against capitalism and technological progress while personally benefiting hugely from their unique bounty. In similar vein, militant atheists rail against Judeo-Christian ethics while wanting to retain the human rights these codes have uniquely bestowed upon western society. As such, maybe Maslow’s ‘hierarchy of needs’ might be refined for the western intelligentsia to become a ‘hierarchy of humbug'.
Catastrophism such as the Global Warming cult is only possible where a large part of society has become so complex and divorced from the basic requirements of survival such as finding food and shelter that people can mentally indulge in such creations. Perhaps Voltaire had the right idea in Candide when Pangloss wanted to philosophise on the meaning of life - he was sent to "cultivate the garden" where he would be too busy for such idle thought.

Green Power - Western Economies Committing Economic Harakiri.

The foundation on which the modern industrial society has grown has been cheap and portable energy.
A flick of a switch powers our lights and our homes and electricity powers our industry , manufacturing goods which allow modern living standards far beyond anything contemplated by our ancestors .

Mass production powered by low cost energy has driven down prices of goods so more and more people can afford to buy them making lives in the 21st century much more comfortable for many.
This is all under attack as Green ideologists want us to throw logic out the window and attempt to replace bountiful cheap energy with ridiculously expensive intermittent and unreliable "green " energy which will kill the golden energy goose. This societal self-mutilation is occurring worldwide but particularly in Europe and by some countries such as Spain and the UK that can least afford it.
James Delingpole comments on the UK situation where , deeply in debt , the UK government is proposing huge investments in wind power , summed up by James in inimitable fashion.
Above all, though, we need to stop kidding ourselves that if only we concentrate on how thoroughly marvellous Michael Gove is or what a splendid idea elected police chiefs are, this nasty, scary energy policy our Coalition has decided to foist on us will somehow magically evaporate. At the moment, we seem to be allowing their spokesmen to get away with all manner of nonsense, such as:

1. Britain needs to set an example on CO2 reduction.
No it doesn’t. At least not unless you believe in futile, suicidal gestures. China’s burgeoning CO2 output alone is more than enough to wipe out any paltry emissions Britain makes by going “low carbon”.
2. It will create green jobs.
Only in places like China, where the wind turbines are manufactured. There will be no benefits to the British economy, just a disastrous replay of the Spanish experience where for every “green job” created by government subsidy, 2.2 jobs were lost in the real economy.
3. It will provide “energy security”.
No it won’t. Because wind power is so unreliable, it has to be backed up by conventional power such as coal or gas. If energy security is really what we want we should go for more coal-fired power. We are, after all, sitting on an island of coal.

4. It doesn’t destroy property values, ruin views, chop birds to pieces, or create a low subsonic hum which drives anyone unfortunate to live by a wind farm mad.
Yep. Sounds like you’ve been taking your daily dose of propaganda from the likes of Renewable UK and Polly Toynbee, who thinks wind farms are rather attractive.
5. The future is low carbon.
Says who? What we need, now more than ever, is cheap power to generate the economic growth the world needs to lift itself out of the looming double-dip recession. Low carbon energy is, by definition, not cheap.
6. But what about “climate change”?
What about it? If it’s “global warming” you’re worried about, it stopped in 1998. Global cooling is a much more imminent and serious problem. Recent changes in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation mean that we’re now set for a 30 year cooling period guaranteed to make a mockery of all our fears about “global warming.” Yet here we are, embarked on a policy guaranteed to raise our energy bills to unaffordable levels, as we enter a period of colder winters.
This nonsense has got to stop. People, are you with me?
Green energy projects will mostly end up like the hulks of dead wind generators of past follies bringing to mind the words of Shelley's Ozymandias:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Australian Election - Game on!

Tony Abbott narrowly won the first and only election debate according to expert journalists but lost according to the TV worm which seems to gauge very little as the needle swings often before the candidates start talking. However Abbott looked and spoke like an alternative Prime Minister and has put his campaign back on track. The latest Newspoll confirms this with Labor's primary support dropping below the Coalition while they are still ahead on the two-party preferred vote.
A major factor in the coming weeks will be the new TV campaign of the junior mining companies against Gillards mining tax which was so damaging to Kevin Rudd.

THE election campaign has become a tight contest, with the Coalition back in front on primary votes.

Furthermore, Tony Abbott has narrowed the leadership gap on Julia Gillard.
The latest Newspoll, conducted exclusively for The Australian, reveals voters have turned against Labor's proposal for a citizens assembly on climate change and that the women's vote advantage for Australia's first female Prime Minister has disappeared.Labor's 10-point lead on a two-party-preferred basis at the start of the election campaign has been reduced to a knife-edge 52 per cent to 48 per cent over the weekend, while the Coalition's primary vote jumped four points to 42 per cent, compared with Labor's 40 per cent, down from 42 per cent.
The next few weeks will be very interesting.

PM vows to ban 'dirty' power stations- Labor's Non-Policy on Climate

Julia Gillard has vowed to stop the building of inefficient coal power stations in her climate change policy release.
JULIA Gillard will ban new coal-fired power stations that use "dirty" technology and require that any power station built can be retro-fitted with developing clean coal technology.

The Prime Minister has also committed $1 billion over 10 years to create an “efficient and strongly regulated” national renewable energy market.
And, in a speech at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Ms Gillard has also pledged $100 million to fund market-based projects designed to develop renewable energy technology.
“We will never allow a highly inefficent and dirty power station to be built again in Australia,” she said.
“If we are reelected, Labor will ensure that all new power stations have to meet world's best practice.”
Wow!This will really upset those authorities feverishly planning to build very inefficient and world's worst practice power stations . Talk about stating the obvious.
Ms Gillard said she wanted to ensure that during her search for a national consensus on climate change action that the nation did not “lock in” new power stations or energy sources that would last 30 years and continue to contribute to pollution.
She has advocated setting up a Climate Change Commission comprising 200 voters who will be "advised" by "selected" Climate Change "experts". Gee, I wonder what conclusion you could expect from such a set-up as I suppose Dr Bob Carter and Professor Ian Plimer won't get an invitation!

More Alarmist Hypocrisy - Please Stop Me From Flying!

Timothy Egan in the New York Times flew across the country to Washington to bag Senator Inhofe for not constructing a greenhouse because it is hot in Washington , and to lobby for laws to stop people like himself flying across the country .

A few days ago, a carbon-emitting, climate-controlled 737 whisked me from one Washington to another, leaving the naturally air-conditioned paradise of a summer in Seattle for a plunge into Hades on the Potomac.

During a stroll around the capital, I sweated through two shirts, drained a liter of water, asked a guy who was hosing his dog to give me a spray. The humidity stung, like fevered hornets on the skin. As a lifelong West Coast weather wimp, I kept thinking: how does anyone live here in summer?

Around Capitol Hill, I could not find what I was looking for: agitprop from the number one global warming denier, Senator James Inhofe, Republican of Oklahoma. In February, remember, during a record snowstorm, Inhofe’s family constructed a primitive igloo

The snowy winter day was followed, all too quickly, by the hottest spring in Washington history. And then, early summer brought a spate of grim heat records around the globe. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, much of Africa, Russia — all posted their hottest temperatures of all time, accompanied by forest fires, water shortages and crop failures.

So we have a snowy day when Sen Inhofe built an igloo followed by a huge list of disasters.

Oddly enough the disastrous winter in Mongolia doesn't get a mention or the people currently dying of cold in South America. Mr Egan also hasn't consulted the satellite record which does not agree with June being the hottest month although the doctored land-based records say so!

However Mr Egan is a true "liberal" when he says he wants the Government to stop him from using excessive carbon instead of choosing to do it himself!
As a citizen of a country that uses more energy than any other, I contribute to the carbon cycle with everything I do, from eating cereal that needs fossil fuel to get to market, to riding on the jet that delivered me from one coast to the other.

But I rely on the experts, those people who’ve devoted their lives to understanding changes in the earth’s temperature, to guide political leaders, and ultimately get me to join the rest of the planet in trying to keep us from slow-cooking ourselves to death.

I have to agree that it is a waste of carbon to fly across America to write twaddle like this!

Marmot Multiplication From Warming.

Marmots in Colorado are benefiting from a warmer climate and their numbers have increased dramatically. Every year, scientists fan out across Colorado's Upper East River Valley to count the yellow-bellied marmots that make their home there in rocky meadows bordered by aspen, fir and spruce trees.

Over the last decade, the work has gotten more tiring. Now they know why — the population of squirrel-like critters has exploded due to environmental changes brought on by global warming, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Nature.
The LA Times is having great difficulty in seeing any good coming from Global Warming with the first positive line followed immediately by a disclaimer : High temperatures are driving a population boom for the squirrel-like creatures, a study finds. and then:Researchers say the animals' fortunes will probably be reversed as their habitat gets hotter.
Of course It's a rare example of animals benefiting from the higher temperatures
So for any budding warmist journalist that is the way you report news of positive warming outcomes.

Prince Attacks Pseudo-Science

Prince Charles, that living example of the perils of centuries of Royal inbreeding has attacked climate change sceptics in a speech at St James Palace.

Prince Charles has accused climate change sceptics of peddling "pseudo science" and bullying governments.

The Prince of Wales said those who question whether human activity is causing global warming and climate change are intimidating governments into not "adopting the precautionary measures necessary to avert environmental collapse", the Daily Mail reports.
In a speech to world business leaders in St James's Palace, Prince Charles launched an attack on those who question global warming.
"People have heard the climate sceptics and attempted to listen to the kind of pseudo science they are peddling," he said.
"I have endlessly been accused of peddling pseudo science for most of my life - just think about the strange irony."
In the past the prince has faced criticism over his support for homeopathic medicine.

The Prince , well known for his statement that he would like to come back as a tampon ,seems ignorant of
the fact that the Royals collectively have the carbon footprint of a small city and he is in no position to hand out advice.It makes you long for the days when the Tower of London was providing accomodation for royals who were meddling in things they didn't understand.

Reduce Carbon Footprint - Flush Granny Down the Sewer

Belgium is considering a new process called resomation for dissolving corpses in an eco-friendly way. I suppose we could have a moving ceremony when we pull the chain and send Granny on her way and every year place some flowers at the local sewage-processing plant. A wall erected there where an engraved plaque could be attached would also be a nice touch.They haven't yet arrived at a pit full of lime and a bulldozer for efficient mass disposals but give them time, as anything is posssible in this alternative universe into which we seem to have slipped! Of course you have to look on the bright side because the green bureaucrats have not yet started calculating carbon footprints of Nursing homes or the benefits to Gaia of premature liquefication of the feeble Grannies of this world.

It could hardly be said to be the most dignified of send-offs.

Undertakers in Belgium plan to eschew traditional burials and cremations and start dissolving corpses instead.
The move is intended to tackle a lack of burial space and environmental concerns
Under the process, known as resomation, bodies are treated in a steel chamber with potassium hydroxide at high pressure and a temperature of 180c (350f).

The raised pressure and temperature means the body reaches a similar end point as in standard cremation — just bones left to be crushed up — in two to three hours.
Six states in America have passed legislation to allow resomation and the Scottish company behind the technology says it is in talks to allow the process in the UK.
Although the ashes can be recycled in waste systems, the residue from the process can also be put in urns and handed over to relatives of the dead like normal ashes from crematorium farewells.
Resomation Ltd was formed in east Glasgow in 2007 and has been in talks with the UK government about using the technology in Britain.
The company says on its website: 'The process needs to be approved in each country and/or state before resomation can take place.
'In the UK discussions have already been held with the relevant Ministers and departments within Whitehall in order to progress the use of resomation in the UK.
'Elsewhere across the globe this is a work in progress.'
Sandy Sullivan, founder of The Resomation Company said: 'Resomation offers a new, innovative approach which uses less energy and emits significantly less greenhouse gasses than cremation.
'I am getting a lot of requests from families and we hope it will become legal in Scotland within the year.
'Burial space is running out and I have had lots of people contact me whose loved ones have chosen resomation.
'It's a highly sensitive subject but I think the public are ready for it.'
The name ‘Resomation’ comes from the Greek word ‘Resoma’ meaning rebirth of the human body.
Members of the EU Commission must rule on the Belgian proposal as there are concerns that residual waste could be flushed into the drainage system.
Belgian undertakers hope to have the greenlight within three months.

Ideology Over-riding Law!

In Nazi Germany , early in the Nazi rule a blind eye was turned to the smashing of Jewish shops and inflicting injury on the owners in complete disregard to the laws at the time because anti-Semitism was implicitly encouraged by the Government . In a re-run of history Melanie Philips in the WSJ writes of the laws being broken with impunity in the name of Global Warming Activism and anti-semitism in the UK , and a legal let-off for electoral bullying by the Black Panther movement in the US.

In both Britain and America, ideological prejudices are coming to undermine the rule of law. In a number of incidents, people who have committed criminal acts have been acquitted or had their cases dismissed purely because they represent a politically correct cause or belong to a "powerless" victim group.

An English jury decided in September 2008 that causing more than £35,000 of damage to a coal-fired power station was justified as a protest against man-made global warming. The jury at Maidstone Crown Court cleared six Greenpeace activists of criminal damage after they argued that they had a '"lawful excuse" to trash property at Kingsnorth power station in Kent to prevent even greater harm caused by climate change.
The jurors arrived at this decision having sat through a propaganda barrage by prominent advocates of the man-made global warming theory, including the pioneer green evangelist James Hansen and the environmental campaigner and newly elected Tory MP Zac Goldsmith. The court case was thus effectively turned into a platform for tendentious ideological propaganda, which appears not only to have been endorsed by the jurors but to have persuaded them that it even justified destroying someone's property.
In a similar English case last month at Hove Crown Court, seven activists were acquitted after causing £180,000 in damage to an arms factory owned by a company that sold military equipment to Israel, when they argued they were seeking to prevent "Israeli war crimes" against Palestinians.

The activists had broken into the factory at night, having previously videotaped interviews declaring their intention to smash it up. Yet with hostility to the Jewish state now at white-hot levels in Britain, such otherwise criminal activity is deemed to be justified by a jury if it is committed in the cause of damaging Israeli interests.
Even the judge in this case, George Bathurst-Norman, appears to have agreed. In his summing-up, he instructed the jury that "you may well think that hell on earth would not be an understatement of what the Gazans suffered in that time." He also highlighted the testimony to the court by Caroline Lucas, a Green member of Parliament, who argued that supposedly "all democratic paths had been exhausted" before the activists had embarked upon their action. What "democratic paths"? Israel was trying to prevent Hamas—considered a terrorist organization even by Her Majesty's government—from firing rockets at Israeli civilians.
Whatever one's view of that conflict, it is a political opinion. It surely should have nothing to do with the exercise of English law designed to protect people's property against criminal damage. It really has come to something when a British judge appears to be encouraging a jury to excuse criminal activity because he sympathizes with the political motive behind it. Thus the impartial administration of justice is now giving way in Britain to bias, bigotry and ideology.
Something very similar is happening in America, too. In May, the U.S. Justice Department suddenly dismissed a voter-intimidation case against members of the New Black Panther Party. Dressed in black uniforms and jackboots, with one of them menacingly tapping a baton, they stood at the entrance of a Philadelphia polling booth on the day Barack Obama was elected president, hurling threats and insults at people turning up to vote, such as "white devils" or "You're about to be ruled by the black man, cracker."
It seems that Nazi Brownshirts have today been replaced by Greenshirts , Black Panthers and a myriad of left-wing activist groups who it seems, are above the law.. Where will the line be drawn - attacks on coal stations are OK so what about an attack on nuclear power stations ,a pet Greenie hate or on British military establishments for prosecuting the war in Afghanistan. Lack of respect for the rule of law is the beginnning of the end for a society ,especially when it is encouraged by the judiciary itself. The gift that Britain has given many of us in the world is the Westminster system with the separation of the enforcement of the law from political interference , a gift it is now denying it's own people.

Green Police Become A Reality in the UK!

Remember the video where a shopper is manhandled by the Green Police for requesting a plastic bag? For UK householders that time has arrived with "green crimes" getting a larger fine than shoplifting!
Figures obtained by The Sunday Telegraph have revealed that local authorities issued more than 1,240 fixed penalty notices last year for breaking rules on recycling and putting out rubbish.

Councils are issuing fines of up to £110 for such infringements as putting their bins out for collection at the wrong time, over filling bins, or putting recycling into the wrong boxes. That compares to the £80 spot fines that can be issued by police to people caught shoplifting.

The controversial rules have been condemned as "draconian" and are deeply unpopular with householders.
Councils insist the fines are necessary. They say that wheelie bins left on pavements are unsightly and may cause a hazard to the elderly.
They claim they must enforce rules on recycling to ensure the government can meet European targets on reducing the amount of rubbish which goes to landfill.
Environmental wardens, nicknamed the "bin police" are sent out to look for infringements and in some cases have rummaged through people's rubbish to inspect the contents or even to find documents linking the rubbish to householders.
As well as the fines, local authorities have issued 24,914 official Statutory Notices last year threatening householders with fines. A further 45,010 warning letters were also sent out pointing out breaches in bin and recycling rules.
I am reminded of the words of Wordsworth - "Shades of the prison house begin to close about the growing boy" when I see the bureaucratic regulation of our lives increasing inexorably day by day . We are like the frog in the saucepan of warming water - we won't jump out until it is too late!

Obama's Uphill Job - Selling Global Warming to a Non-Warming Nation!

Democrats and the Obama administration will attempt just about every falsehood and any misrepresentation in efforts to pass some form of the global warming, cap and trade, energy legislation. As long as the mainstream media refuses to do any fact checking, the global warming B.S. will continue.

A recent example of the propensity to mislead and falsely claim is the Democrat's web site pushing the Waxman-Markey cap and trade legislation. On that site, they misleadingly state what global warming is supposedly doing to areas of the world, including the Northeast region of the U.S.:
"If the current rate of heat-trapping emissions continues, by 2070 summers in Boston will feel like those of South Carolina today. By the end of the century, temperatures could rise up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit in the region. Cities across New England, which historically experience only one or two days per year above 100 degrees each summer, could average 20 such days per summer, while more southern cities such as Hartford could average nearly 30 days. The character of the seasons will change significantly. Spring could arrive three weeks earlier, with summer lengthening by about three weeks, autumn becoming warmer and drier, and winter becoming shorter and milder."
Okay, based on actual empirical evidence, are any of the above GW claims likely to happen within the next 60 to 100 years. In a word, NO. The linked postings above clearly document the global warming lies (or, if you prefer, the wildly speculative, irresponsible predictions with no basis in reality) on the Democrat's site. An example is the statement that the Northeast region's temperatures may rise 14 degrees by 2100. That claim is so outlandishly bogus it becomes synonymous with an outright lie.
In a further examination of the data, the charts below show the impact of the huge amounts of global CO2 emissions on U.S. Northeast regional summer and winter temperatures since 1895. How big was that impact? Well, as the charts depict, just about squat. And whatever squat Northeast warming has occurred is most likely explained by a combination of natural forces and land-use forcings, not human CO2 emissions. And by the way, note both charts reveal 10-year average temperatures (red curve) being higher prior to the 1970's.
Why do politicians get away with the bullstuff lying like this? Easy. One, because the mainstream media isn't doing their job; and two, the politicians have basically bought the silence of the majority of climate scientists - one can't bite Uncle Sugar Daddy's hand and expect to prosper. The amazing thing about the Global Warming scam is that the best temperature-metered country in the world ,the US, has shown virtually no nett warming over the last 100 years and the data clearly shows the nineteen thirties were as warm or warmer than the present. The graphs tell the story.

Solar Aircraft- An Expensive Boy's Toy!

The New York Times has lauded a new solar aero-plane at prototype stage in Europe saying:
Aircraft like the Solar Impulse are on the cutting edge of technologies aimed at curbing the amount of greenhouse gases that come from flying.
Although a pretty toy the Solar Impulse is basically a powered glider with the lawn-mower size engine usually used replaced by a bank of solar panels and electric motor. This type of design has as much commercial application as a chocolate tea-pot but will have greenies all over the world wetting themselves at the prospect of solar powered flight. Putting it in perspective a solar panel can develop up to a maximum of 100 watts per square meter - a commercial 747 uses 140 million watts in normal flight .A solar panel area of 1Km by 1.4 Km would develop that power at midday with the sun directly over-head which would present a few minor aircraft design problems that even the NYT should be able to understand!

The Solar Impulse, whose sponsors include Deutsche Bank, is not the only solar-powered aircraft. The project is just one of many seeking a radical breakthrough to reduce the effect of aviation on the environment.

There is no breakthrough possible in this direction and even a preliminary engineering evaluation would show that.
Among the major airlines, there have been remarkable advances in biofuels aimed at reducing the footprint of commercial aviation drastically. But those experiments are at an early stage.

Biofuels have become something of a dirty word among thinking environmentalists because the policy of putting food into fuel-tanks causes starvation in Third world countries and they don't reduce the carbon footprint anyway- they just make the green chatterati feel good !
However the EU has found an answer to the problem of airline greenhouse gas emission - A Great Big New Tax which will of course need a gaggle of over-paid bureaucrats to administer it.
So instead of relying on a technological leap forward that still may be years or even decades away, the European Union is embarking on another way of lowering the emissions from flying: making airlines join its five-year-old Emissions Trading System.

Most commercial aircraft that land in E.U. countries or take off from one of its airports are expected to have to start trading under that system in 2012, paying for permits for some pollution.
This of course will work very well because all the bureaucrats will still fly, Government-paid,around the world for gabfests telling us how to reduce our emissions and the wealthy and the Hollywood glamorous unintelligentsia won't even notice the tax . John Citizen who wants to take his family for a well-earned holiday will be the bunny and will have to pay out of his own pocket.

Mann says Hockey Stick should not have become Icon! You Don't Say!

Louise Gray of the Telegraph dutifully reports on Mann's latest comments on the iconic Hockey Stick.
Speaking to the BBC recently, Prof Mann, a climatologist at Pennsylvania State University, said he had always made clear there were "uncertainties" in his work.

"I always thought it was somewhat misplaced to make it a central icon of the climate change debate," he said. As Steve McIntyre has shown the "uncertainties" were so large that Mann's work was basically only suitable for wrapping the fish and chips. The Hockey Stick was made an icon to remove the MWP, because if the MWP existed as everyone knew it did , the whole idea of "unprecedented warming" was down the toilet, along with the whole Global Warming scam!

However Prof Bob Watson, a UK Government adviser on climate change, said even if severe global warming is not certain it is worth preparing for the higher temperature projections.

"What risks are we willing to take? The average homeowner probably has fire insurance. They don't expect a fire in their home [but] they are still willing to take our fire insurance because they don't want the risk and there's probably a much better chance of us seeing the middle to upper end of that temperature projection than a single person saying they'll have a fire in their home tomorrow morning," he said.
Bob Watson predictably goes with precautionary principle argument but what he doesn't say is the cost of his insurance to the householder, unlike fire insurance, is prohibitive ! Following his flawed logic no one would fly without a parachute because the aircraft could crash ,ocean liners would carry thousands of lifeboats, and automobile travel would be entirely too dangerous. However we routinely ignore the precautionary principle in our daily lives because of the convenience of modern technology and accept that there are always risks associated with modern life.
However I must say that Louise has written a more balanced article than usual ,but has been guilty of using the devices of primacy and recency to underline the warmist view by starting with a "factual" statement about Mann's graph and finishing with a stump speech by uber-Warmist Bob Watson . The skeptics views are buried in the middle which is not ideal, but previously they would not have been there at all, so I suppose we have to be thankful for small mercies.

Washington, DC: Inhaled anaesthetics widely used for surgery-particularly the anaesthetic desflurane - are a major contributor to global warming, according to a new study.Dr Susan M Ryan of University of California and computer scientist Claus J Nielsen of University of Oslo said that sevoflurane, isoflurane, and desflurane are recognised greenhouse gases.

Using desflurane for one hour is equivalent to 235 to 470 miles of driving.
The anaesthetics "usually are vented out of the building as medical waste gases and remain in the atmosphere for a long time," the researchers write.
Ryan and Nielsen suggest some "simple, knowledge-based decisions" that anaesthesiologists can follow to minimize their environmental impact unless there are medical reasons to use it and avoiding unnecessarily high anaesthetic flow rates, especially with desflurane.
Given the minute amounts of the gas used compared with our atmosphere volume you would wonder why bother and ask the question whether the time used could be actually spent doing something useful like finding ways to make sick people better! Maybe the days of a bottle of whisky, bullet between the teeth and six orderlies holding the amputee down are about to return!

Lomborg- Billions of Pounds for Tiny Results!

Bjorn Lomborg writes that the European response to the alleged Global Warming threat is will cost billions without significant results.

European leaders have a lot to deal with. The financial crisis has prompted several national stimulus packages and a joint effort to keep Greece afloat, while the EU is in danger of being outstripped by other economies that are growing faster, producing more efficiently and at lower costs.

One bright spot is that politicians remain committed to responding to global warming. Unfortunately, their plans do not withstand scrutiny. New research shows that the EU's "20/20/20" policy, which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 (and ensure 20 per cent renewable energy), will cost hundreds of billions of euros but yield only tiny benefits. The UK alone will be hit to the tune of an annual 35 billion euros (£28 billion).
As a cost-benefit analysis by the climate-change economist Richard Tol shows, any single regional carbon-reduction scheme will have a very small effect on emissions and temperature rises across the globe. That's not an argument against ever implementing one: but it means that it's crucial that the numbers stack up.

The EU recently stated that it would cost £39 billion a year to meet its emissions target. That figure is implausibly optimistic. Averaging out the best-regarded economic models shows that, even if politicians got their policies exactly right, the cost would come to at least £90 billion a year.
And Europe has not got it exactly right. Instead, it has made things worse, by introducing additional red tape, complication and constraints – in particular, that 20 per cent renewable-energy target. This is expensive because popular "green" energy sources such as wind and solar power cost more than replacing coal with gas. As a result, the real cost of EU policy is likely to be as much as £170 billion.
In his study for the Copenhagen Consensus Centre, Tol assessed the net economic benefits of this policy. Using the conventional estimate that one ton of carbon dioxide is likely to cause about $7 (£4.50) of damage, he found that the total benefit of the EU policy was just £5.7 billion. In other words, every euro spent is likely to generate just three cents' worth of benefits. My research shows that by the end of this century, the EU's approach will reduce temperature rises by approximately 0.05C – almost too small to measure.

The tragedy is that the EU could do much better for the world, and for itself. For far less than £8 billion a year the EU could halve the incidence of malaria, provide micronutrients (particularly vitamin A and zinc) to 80 per cent of the world's undernourished children and prevent a million deaths from TB.
EU leaders should not abandon the fight against climate change. But instead of wasting vast sums on a pointless policy, they should invest in developing green-energy alternatives. The reason it costs so much to reduce carbon emissions is that the green alternatives aren't close to being ready to replace oil and other fossil fuels. Change this, by investing in R& D, and the global impasse over climate change disappears. If we had affordable green-energy sources, everyone – including China and India – would buy them, and long-term emissions would drop significantly.
What Europe must not do is continue to barrel down a path that makes no economic sense. Yet it seems committed to its reckless course. The European Commission wants to toughen the carbon-reduction target to 30 per cent below 1990 levels – which Tol calculates would cost roughly £370 billion a year, twice as much as the existing plans. The effect, over the next 90 years, would be to reduce temperatures by an additional one-hundredth of a degree.
Expensive, poorly conceived carbon-emission plans such as the EU's will cause major economic damage and political strife, while doing little to slow global warming. Europe must change course.

Lomborg believes in Global Warming but is a realist and a humanitarian believing that there are much more pressing needs for the resources diverted so-called carbon pollution. The loud promises of funds for global warming iniatives have,where they have been fulfilled, been accomplished by diverting funds from humanitarian aid projects.

Pop-star and courageous anti-toilet-paper crusader Sheryl Crow apparently has a new political concern: Tea Partiers.
The country crooner told CBS journalist Katie Couric that Tea Party members are uneducated, angry and potentially dangerous in an interview with Glamour magazine this June.
After Crow complained in the interview that Americans have become too blasé about politics, and that nobody has taken to the streets to cause "a riot or a revolution," Couric correctly pointed to the Tea Party as an example of modern day activism.
"What do you think of the Tea Party movement? Because that is the specific sort of group of people who would say we're out there, we're getting involved in the process...," asked Couric.
"I appreciate the fact that those people are out there and that they are fired up," responded Crow, before adding that Tea Partiers "haven't educated themselves...they're just pissed off."
Crow is another entertainer with the arrogance to think that the ability to warble a tune or strum a guitar attaches some special value to her opinions and follows Paul Mc Cartney's comments on Warming skeptics being like Holocaust deniers.
The public should be grateful that over the years many of the Hollywood elite have selflessly donated time between re-hab sessions , to give us the benefit of their opinions on how to live our lives.

UK To Be Powered By Sea Breezes and Pixie Dust says Barker!

Greg Barker,the Climate Change Minister of the UK Government has delusions of grandeur planning a future of unlimited green power (music please) with "energy doctors" helping the population to find the correct way in this Energy Utopia. When the public stop dancing over the meadows long enough to find out they cannot afford this intermittent and expensive power they will send this dreamer to the political oblivion where he belongs.

The 43-year-old believes Britain could become the “Saudi Arabia of renewable energy” by investing in offshore wind, wave and tidal sources. In the Budget, the Coalition pledged to set up a Green Investment Bank to help finance renewable power stations, and Barker has ambitious plans to make London “the world hub of green finance”, creating “green ISAs and pensions” so that the public can invest in, and benefit from, the massive growth in the clean energy industry.
Ten thousand quid a house will about do it ,but don't worry we'll put it on the never-never and the kids can pay for it.
This strategy is central to the Government’s Green New Deal to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent on 1990 levels by 2050. If that is to be achieved, between 400,000 and 1.8 million homes a year will have to be upgraded between now and then, at an annual cost of between £5 billion and £15 billion.

A flagship “pay as you save” scheme will allow people to book a free consultation with an “energy doctor” at a participating supermarket or store. After an energy audit, corrective measures up to a cost of £10,000 will be recommended. Home owners will repay the cost over time through savings on their fuel bill, says Mr Barker. Although details are yet to be finalised, the scheme could start as early as next year.
He hails this policy as a “completely new radical and ambitious approach to insulating the nation’s homes” that will not only help combat climate change by cutting emissions but help cut the average family’s fuel bill, which has soared to around £1,300 per annum.
“We have to help families reduce the amount they are spending on electricity and heating their homes, and we will do this by creating a new market,” he said. “We will bring new participants into the insulating business, like B&Q, Marks & Spencer or Virgin, as well as trusted energy companies like British Gas and others, to help pay for the upfront cost without the householder having to incur debt on their bills. The cost of upgrading each property will be attached to the energy bill and repaid over 25 years.”
The salutary lesson of the on-going Spanish "green energy disaster" together with the parlous state of the UK piggy-bank ( it is empty - less than empty,in fact) should encourage very sober energy decisions,not fairy-tale schemes.

In a preview of Barker's Britain the island of Eigg was hailed as Britain’s first “green” island and a glimpse of the what the future could hold for the rest of the country.

The future turned out to be one of power rationing and a return to reliable fossil based fuel technology.
But when the inhabitants of the remote Scottish island of Eigg put their faith in the wind and rain to provide all their electricity they did not reckon for one thing – mild weather.
Now the 95 residents are being asked not to use kettles, toasters or other kitchen appliances after uncharacteristically mild weather caused a critical shortage of power.
Other household equipment such as washing machines are to be used only outside times of “peak” demand for the island’s 45 homes and 20 businesses.
Weeks of what passes for heatwave conditions in the Inner Hebrides have caused water levels on the island’s three main burns to drop uncharacteristically low, cutting off the island’s hydroelectricity supply.
The normally powerful Atlantic gusts in the tiny island south of Skye have also reduced to a pleasant breeze leaving the island’s wind turbines idle for hours on end.
As a result, the community owned power company has placed the island on “red alert” and issued notices effectively rationing electricity.
It has had to revert to using old-fashioned diesel power to run a backup generator to keep the lights on.
The shortages come only months after Eigg’s innovative renewable power grid won a share of a £1 million first prize in a nationwide competition to become model on how to tackle climate change.
At least the money from the Climate Change prize will come in handy to buy diesel fuel.

The latest phone poll by Morgan-7News has Gillard and Labor in trouble. It seems that the cynical ploy to remove Rudd has back-fired as more people see it for what it is.
Just five days into the job, Julia Gillard's honeymoon appears to be over, with the new Prime Minister scoring her first shock opinion poll.

An exclusive Morgan-7News poll shows Labor has gone backwards since Ms Gillard deposed Kevin Rudd from the leadership last Thursday.
The Coalition has an election-winning lead, climbing 4.5 points to 51.5 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.
Labor has dropped 4.5 points to 48.5 per cent.
The poll, taken over the weekend and yesterday, also puts Opposition Leader Tony Abbott back in front as preferred prime minister on 48 per cent to Julia Gillard's 40 per cent.
The primary vote has the Liberal/Nationals on 45.5 per cent (up 4.5 points), Labor on 38.5 per cent (down 2.5 points) and the Greens on 9 per cent (down 3.5 points).
Today, most punters were betting that Ms Gillard will take the country to an election sooner rather than later, making August 28 the favourite Saturday for a ballot.

Although phone polls are not as reliable as face-to-face polls there is no doubting there has been a big swing to the Coalition .

On June 25-28 2010, the four days immediately following Julia Gillard’s swearing in as Australia’s new Prime Minister, support for the L-NP is 51.5% (up 4.5% since the Face-to-Face Morgan Poll conducted June 19/20, 2010) ahead of the ALP 48.5%, (down 4.5%) according to this week’s special telephone Morgan Poll.

If a Federal Election were held today the L-NP would have won a close election to defeat the ALP according to the Morgan Poll.
The telephone Morgan Poll showed an L-NP primary vote of 45.5% (up 4.5% since the Face-to-Face Morgan Poll of June 19/20, 2010) well ahead of the ALP 38.5% (down 2.5%) with the Greens down 3.5% to 9%, Family First 1.5% (unchanged) and Independents/ Others up 1.5% to 5.5%.

Gillard's trashing of Kevin07 has only just begun

Annabel Crabb of the ABC's The Drum adds weight to the previous post on the trashing of Kevin Rudd. One of the reasons he was denied a cabinet job is because of the hatchet job on the way .

It's probably for the best that Julia Gillard has opted to keep Kevin Rudd out of the Cabinet room for now.

In fact, it's probably advisable, for the immediate future, for Ms Gillard to ensure she is not in any room at the same time as her immediate predecessor.
This is a man who is reported to have freaked out when confronted by an inferior sandwich at 30,000 feet.
How will he be taking the sight of his former deputy calmly, charmingly, deliberately - and with significant apparent success - dancing on his grave?
Thursday's press conference by the new PM must have been bad enough.
In it, Ms Gillard - her tresses redone in a particularly murderous shade of claret - made repeated reference to the Rudd government as "a good government that had lost its way".
If you listen to the polls, and Julia Gillard does, you can assume the abandonment of the emissions trading scheme - effected back in April, when Newspoll went south at the angle of a Himalayan goat-track - was a significant instance of way-losing.
And where did the relevant players stand, on the trashing of the ETS?
Gillard: For.
Rudd: Against.
Ms Gillard has never denied this, but she has done little to dispel the popular perception that identifies the dithering on climate change as Kevin Rudd's.
If the victory press conference was tough for Kevin Rudd, one wonders what he might have felt on Sunday morning, when he unrolled the papers to find wall-to-wall coverage of Julia Gillard's renunciation of "his" population views.
Mr Rudd has argued at length that his comments embracing a "big Australia" were not an active endorsement of a 36 or 40 million population target.
Those figures, he explained umpteen times, were departmental projections, not an objective.
For months, Tony Abbott has joyously capitalised on the opportunity offered by Rudd's "big Australia", suggesting that the Government's plan was for 16 million extra newcomers to be personally escorted into your job and mine by an obsessively expansionist Kevin07.
Which is fine, because verballing Kevin Rudd is - or was - Tony Abbott's job.
How must Kevin Rudd be feeling, now that it is clear that Julia Gillard also considers it her job?
The new PM's weekend interviews deliberately plant Kevin Rudd in the "increase immigration" camp, and herself several hundred kilometres away, which makes perfect sense if you happen to be Julia Gillard but cannot, one imagines, feel anything other than utter outrage if you happen to be her luckless predecessor.
The weeks ahead will include many such examples, as Julia Gillard tacitly encourages a public awareness of Kevin07's failings, so as to deflect attention from her own.
It's a brutal job they're doing on him.
Under these circumstances, including Kevin Rudd in the Cabinet would amount to an invitation for him to join in.
And that - after a week of indignity - would be the cruellest cut of all.
The press should ,and mostly won't , ask where Juilia was when the Government "lost it's way" as she euphemistically puts it. Was she locked in a closet as Barnaby Joyce suggests?
There is enough ammunition for Abbott to use if he and his team are up to the task of unseating Gillard but the job is much harder now.

Labor's Scapegoat Strategy

Dennis Shanahan reports on the delivery of the final blows to the Rudd political corpse when he was shut out of the new cabinet by Julia Gillard clearing the way for him to be made a scapegoat for Labor's disastrous record. However of some comfort to skeptics is that Gillard is showing the same reticence as Rudd to move forward on Climate Change policy.

JULIA Gillard came not to praise the assassinated Kevin Rudd yesterday but to bury him.

The Prime Minister has also moved with haste to bury with him as many of his contentious policies as possible.
Gillard yesterday showed every bit of the political steel that was on display during last Wednesday night's execution by shutting Rudd out of her cabinet, despite his wish to serve on the front bench.
While offering sympathy for the former leader, still hurt and at home in The Lodge, Gillard offered no comfort.
While suggesting Rudd have a break and that she would be "delighted" to have him back on the front bench after the election should the government be re-elected, she made it clear she overruled his wishes, exercised her authority and shut him out of her cabinet.
Rudd,Gillard,Swan and Tanner were the Gang of Four who were running the Government agenda and now Julia and her cronies are pretending to have been in a closet when all the incompetent decisions were made . Rudd has been taken to Calvary to expiate their sins so the three remaining plotters come away snowy clean.
The battle will be to convince the electorate after the honeymoon period that this nonsense is true. Gillard has kept the incompetent ministry intact , while appointing Simon Crean to clean up the billion dollar mess she herself has made of the school building project BER. I remember what some wit in the past had painted on a New Labor poster , "Same Old Sh**, New Flies" , which translated to today for Gillard would probably read " Same Old Sh**, Same Flies".

Moral Decadence in The Suburbs!

English lawns will become a sign of "social and moral decadence" in the next decade as climate change makes it increasingly difficult to maintain traditional gardens, horticulturalists have warned.
In the short term, water shortages in the next 12 years will make it difficult to have a lawn.

Like in Australia during recent droughts, Prof Dixon said watering a lawn will be seen as an extravagance only experienced by the rich.

"Lush, well-watered, English 18th and 19th Century parklands will suffer. Retaining their rural Arcadian charm requires reversion to wild flower meadows managed with traditional hay-cuts without mowing until early September," he said. "Clinging to the grassy elegance of English lawns will be signals of social and moral decadence."
The Environment Agency predicts most households will have a water meter in areas of "water stress" like the South East by 2015 and the whole country will have the device installed by 2035.

Louisa should have, and of course didn't , check her facts because the story fitted with her warmist beliefs.
As the UK has supposedly had 30 years of uncontrollable warming I thought to check the drought situation by the simple mechanism of going to the rainfall statistics.
For example, if you compare the 1961-1990 average rainfall with the period of 1971-2000, you will find that England and Wales turned slightly wetter over the last 30 years.
So we have had increasing CO2 , increasing temperature and instead of the predicted droughts we have an inconvenient increase in rainfall. However the good Professor Dixon will be able to pick up his next lot of grant money and another warmist headline is created.
And speaking of moral decadence billionaire Paul McCartney speaks out labelling skeptics as deniers and thinks that the world should change to expensive "green" energy - of course rocketing power prices will be a major problem to him and I am sure his lawns will be watered . Another celebrity telling us how to live our lives!

Green Money-Making Scam With UN Carbon Credits

The Mafia is in a small league compared with the crooks rorting the UN Carbon Credit system. EU Referendum reports that refrigerant gas HCF 23 Carbon credits are worth up to 70 times what it costs to manufacture the gas - a nice little earner for the financial blowflies buzzing around the bloated UN global warming money machine.
How to get rich was our subject for discussion last December as we reported how the CFC scam, mainly in China and India, was making entrepreneurs obscenely rich out of selling carbon credits. Now, six months later, Le Monde has picked up exactly the same story (translation here), complaining that CFCs have become the main source of CDMs.

Half a billion tonnes of CO2 (equivalent) "saved" through the CDM between 2004-2012 have come from the destruction of HCF 23. As we pointed out in our piece, this is the by-product of HCF 22 production but, so lucrative has the CDM business become that the by-product has become the product.
We now have the perverse consequences, says Le Monde, that because the price paid for the destruction of gas is up to 70 times the actual cost of production, it is now being produced in order to generate carbon credits.
Manufacturers have increased their production, thereby artificially and deliberately maintaining high levels of HCF 23 production, which would not exist if there was no financial incentive from carbon credit sales. And it is now estimated that these abuses have allowed the industry to collect one billion dollars annually.
Thus, concludes Le Monde, we see the absurd situation in which one "device" of the UN – the Kyoto Protocol - encourages the production of a gas, while another "device" of the UN - the Montreal Protocol - seeks its eradication.
Only the greenies could invent such a stupid, malign system – and then keep schtum about it as money pours into the coffers of carbon traders and opportunists.

It is high time to get rid of the incompetent UN and their highly paid un-elected bumbling bureaucrats!
